Philosophy

Competition Philosophy

"Great origami is not about making more folds. It is about making the right ones." — VAGH 2026 Competition Philosophy

The Society of Indian Origami Artists Competition was created with the belief that origami should remain both accessible and respected as an art form.

This competition is not designed solely to reward complexity or the number of folds in a model. Instead, it aims to recognize the qualities that truly define strong origami work: precision, cleanliness, thoughtful shaping, presentation, patience, and folding maturity.

Participants are free to fold any model of their choice, whether simple or highly complex. A beautifully folded traditional model can stand alongside an advanced technical work if it demonstrates refinement, care, and strong execution.

Our goal is to create an environment where folders of all skill levels feel welcome to participate without intimidation. Rather than encouraging unnecessary complexity for the sake of competition, we hope to encourage artistic growth, discipline, creativity, and appreciation for careful craftsmanship.

This competition also values honesty and authenticity. Origami is a physical art form built through patience, decision-making, and human effort. Because of this, submissions should represent the real folded work as accurately as possible.

Beyond awards and rankings, the competition aims to contribute toward building a stronger and more connected origami community in India. We hope this platform encourages more artists to share their work, improve their skills, exchange ideas, and help origami gain greater recognition as a serious artistic discipline.

This is only the beginning of a larger long-term vision: creating meaningful opportunities, recognition, and community-driven growth for origami artists across the country.

How It Works

Competition Structure

Four carefully designed stages, from registration to recognition. Here is exactly what to expect.

01

Stage One

Registration & Submission Opening

Participants may register and submit their entries through the official submission portal once applications open. All competition rules, judging criteria, and submission guidelines will be available before submission begins, ensuring every participant can prepare with full clarity.

02

Stage Two

Submission Period

Participants are free to fold any origami model of their choice. The competition focuses on quality of folding rather than complexity alone.

  • Both simple and complex models are allowed
  • Previously folded works are permitted
  • Participants may also create new works specifically for the competition
  • Multiple image submissions are supported
  • Optional video submissions may be allowed
03

Stage Three

Judging Process

Entries will be reviewed by our panel of expert judges against six core criteria:

  • Cleanliness
  • Precision
  • Shaping
  • Presentation
  • Folding maturity
  • Overall execution
Optional constructive criticism may also be provided to participants who choose to receive feedback, a chance to grow from every submission regardless of result.
04

Stage Four

Results & Recognition

Final results will be announced officially after the judging period. The top three participants will be officially awarded. All participants will be celebrated as part of SIOA's growing national community.
